House-Review: Dynamic Rockers/Terry Johnson Jr - Don't Be Surprised/Hold On

Label: Stamina Recordings [STAMINA003]
Mixes: Don't Be Surprised (Original), Hold On (Original)
Useable or Best Mix(es): Don't Be Surprised (Original)

Refers to: Don't Be Surprised (Original)

Style: House (Pumping French Dub)

Mix-In: Medium-short vocal-only samples without bassdrum, then main theme without interruption ... very suddenly, not so nice to mix ... danger of "vocal-on-vocal" when preceding track has vocal-samples as well

Drive: Very pumping bassline, sounds vocoded, very good ... samples are short and dubby, but that's because it's french ... some short vocal phrases, which are becoming stronger over time ... only one or two tiny breaks between intro and main break-down which suits pretty well ... main theme is long, without many variations, but that's typical for french and not really bad

Beat: Standard stuff

Quality: Standard stuff

Break-Down: The break-down is very short and does not differ much from the small breaks in between the main theme ... there is no build-up; the main theme suddenly sets in again - but as the bassline is a pumping one, this is perfectly OK

Mix-Out: Main theme plays until end, then suddenly stops and only a vocal sample without any beat remains for a few bars ... very uncomfortable to mix, requires a hard cut without much mixing ... could really be better

Comment/Opinion: The track is pumping very hard, it's perfectly suitable to rock the crowd during peak-time. It doesn't build-up the classical way, but takes the french way instead - that's a nice change and works perfectly as well. It's a pity, that the track doesn't feature a DJ-friendly intro/outro. For example, the track denies to be mixed into a vocal tune. Nevertheless, this track is worth to be kept in your record case. You can deal with the intro/outro issue.
